1990s: The Decade That Shaped Ukraine

As Ukraine approaches its 30th birthday on Aug. 24 as an independent nation, the Kyiv Post decided to go back to the beginning -- the decade of the 1990s and how it shaped the Ukraine that exists today. In important ways, the nation hasn't recovered from the warping that took place then with the rise of the oligarchs, the failure to create strong democratic institutions and the inability to prevent much of the nation from slipping into poverty. We have exclusive comments from billionaire oligarch Rinat Akhmetov & first President Leonid Kravchuk. Columns by Mikheil Saakashvili and Bohdan Nahaylo. The Big Interview with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. Ukraine is again in lockdown mode because of the coronavirus -- and businesses are suffering. Ukraine lost almost 4,000 of its restaurants in the last year, leaving 14,700. Kyiv Post Legal Talks on the Ukrainian banking sector's $15 billion in bad debt. Tensions running high over the Russian military build-up and increasing attacks in the eastern Donbas, killing 22 soldiers this year. The authorities are rattled by radical protests over the imprisonment of Odesa activist Serhiy Sternenko.
