Finding Freedom In Ukraine

This edition is published two days earlier than usual because the Oct. 14 Defenders Day national holiday forced early deadlines to the printer. Our main focus is World in Ukraine: Azerbaijan - the first time we've focused on the fellow former Soviet republic. Like always, we had a sponsor committed -- SOCAR, the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic. But they pulled their sponsorship on Oct. 8 because they didn't like our publication of the Pandora Papers investigation, which exposed more $700 million in secret real estate purchases by the country's second-generation dictator, Ilham Aliyev. So we went ahead anyway with the planned coverage. And it's no wonder SOCAR feared independent journalism. We interviewed human rights activists, journalists and diaspora from Azerbaijan -- some 150,000 Azeris, or 1.5% of Azerbaijan -- live in Ukraine. Escaping repression and finding freedom were reasons why they fled the homeland.  Also, we have strong coverage & op-eds on Ukraine's obstructed and stuttering reforms. Kyiv Post Employment Fair still going strong after 17 years -- and on Oct. 8 was offline for the first time in two years. After 90 years, Zhovten theater has seen a lot -- Soviets, Nazis and a devastating fire -- but the show still goes on!
