Volia Cable has started providing broadband Internet access in Kyiv over the KTM and IVK cable TV systems, according to Dmytro Kiriliuk, the company's technical services head.
Volia’s own Internet service provider supports the broadband service.
Kiriliuk said the company began testing the broadband Internet service about four years ago in Pechersk. Now the service is offered in Podil and Starokyivsky as well, he said.
Eventually, the company plans to offer broadband cable Internet service to cable subscribers throughout the city.
Volia owns three of the city’s cable television companies, covering about 80 percent of all Kyiv residents.
Broadband Internet service allows data transfer at speeds of up to 43 Megabits per second. The cable firm said it will likely charge for the service based on the data transfer traffic rather than on the hourly basis many dial?up ISPs charge.
Using broadband, home and office PC users connected to the Internet can receive audio and video broadcasts and use Internet telephone services with good quality results.
Computers connected to cable television systems can send and receive Internet data using frequencies not used for transmitting television signals. The system allows users to watch television and use the Internet simultaneously.
Volia Cable is owned by Sigma Bleyzer, a Kyiv?based portfolio investment firm.
