KYIV, Apr. 17 – The Russian Itera concern has completed its gas supplies to Ukrainian power plants in compliance with a grant from the European Union to compensate lost capacities in the wake of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant closure.

According to the agreement with the EU, Itera has fulfilled its end of a calling for 374 million cubic meters of gas to be pumped into Ukraine, AK&M reported, citing Itera’s press service.

In December of last year the European Commission decided to give Ukraine a 3-year aid package worth 64 million euros, which was expected to be channeled into the purchase of an additional 1.3 billion cubic meters of gas.

The gas was meant to offset the electric energy shortage caused by Chernobyl’s closure, which amounted to 4.7 billion kilowatt-hours.

The next EU tender for supplying gas to Ukraine is expected to take place in the fall.
