KYIV, July 17 – President Leonid Kuchma has directed the National Bank of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers to adopt measures that will facilitate creation of specialized banks.

This directive is contained in the decree “On Measures Aimed at Strengthening the Ukrainian Banking System and Increasing its Role in the Economic Transformation Processes,” which Kuchma recently signed.

Among other things, the decree calls for creation of banks specializing in loan mortgaging, housing loans, and micro loans.

Moreover, the National Bank of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers are to separately consider (by November) the issue of creation of a Land Bank.

According to active legislation and the National Bank of Ukraine’s norms, all banks are universal banks.

A total of 161 banks presently operate in Ukraine.
