KYIV, July 21 – Ukraine will become a member of the World Trade Organization in the near future, Deputy Economy Minister Andriy Honcharuk said Thursday, not naming an exact date.

According to Honcharuk, WTO experts have noted Ukraine’s significant progress in passing legislative acts that correspond to the rule and procedures for organizing trade.

The decision on Ukraine’s membership in the WTO will be submitted after the eighth meeting of the working group on Ukraine’s application for WTO membership, and the government’s fulfillment of a series of measures.

In particular, Ukraine must create a schedule plan for Parliament’s passage of laws complying with the WTO’s requirements, and pass a packet of documents directed toward development of the agricultural sector.

The Ukrainian delegation will also hold and informal meeting with WTO representatives that will determine the range of issues to be discussed at the eighth meeting of the working group.

The seventh meeting of the working group on Ukraine’s application for WTO membership took place in Geneva last week.

The meeting’s participants included delegations from 24 WTO member countries, which comprise the working group, and 8 countries with observer status.

Earlier this year, Premier Viktor Yuschenko announced Ukraine’s intention to join the WTO by the end of the year.
