KYIV, Apr. 4 – Russia and Ukraine are planning to unite their power grids on April 15, a Ukrainian government source told ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.
Good preconditions for uniting the grids have emerged in Ukraine, as current frequencies have been stable at the 50 Hertz-level for over a month.
However, at night, the lack of regulating facilities triggers a frequency increase of over 50 Hertz, which is dangerous for nuclear power plants. After a two-year break, therefore, this fact makes reunification of the two countries’ power systems important, the report said.
A memorandum on unifying the Ukrainian and Russian power grids was signed by the presidents of both countries in February.
Parallel grid operations must be ensured by a technical agreement, contracts between the United Energy Systems of Russia and the Ukrainian Energorynok companies, agreements on transit of Russian electricity via Ukraine to third countries and a contract on Russian electricity supplies to Ukraine.
