You're reading: Unification of Russian, Ukrainian power grids postponed

MOSCOW, Apr. 17 – The Russian and Ukrainian power grids were not connected on Sunday as scheduled, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Sources at the Unified Energy Systems of Russia said that the reason for the delay was the Ukrainian government’s exclusion in a resolution regarding the cross-border energy hook-up of key points provided in a Russian-Ukrainian memorandum to join the two grids.

In particular, the Ukrainian government’s resolution does not provide for Russian energy transit to Moldova via Ukraine and does not enable Russian power stations to supply energy to Ukrainian customers on a commercial basis.

The joint work of the two countries’ power systems is impossible until these problems are settled on the Ukrainian end, UES officials said.
