Ousted Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said he has no information indicating the involvement of the Russian special services in the coup in Kyrgyzstan.
"I can’t say it was done by the Russian special services," Bakiyev said at a press conference in Minsk on Friday. At the same time, Bakiyev said Russia was unhappy with his policies, including his decision to keep the U.S. air base at the Bishkek Manas Airport. "We wanted to pursue an independent foreign policy, but I didn’t realize it irritated Russia so much," Bakiyev said.
Bakiyev also said he is surprised by the lack of a reaction from the CSTO to the events in Kyrgyzstan. However, he said he assumes that many CSTO members secretly support him. "I think they are supporting me, they are just not brave enough to admit that," Bakiyev said. Bakiyev said Belarus is the only CSTO country to provide support to him. "Lukashenko did not only manifest decently as a person, but also manifested bravery as a state figure. He expressed respect to the people of Kyrgyzstan not just to me," Bakiyev said.
Bakiyev reiterated that the heads of the CSTO countries should promote the stabilization of the situation in Kyrgyzstan. "The leaders of the CSTO countries should turn to Kyrgyzstan and help it enter a legal realm," Bakiyev said. Bakiyev also called for "negotiations to make further actions in Kyrgyzstan legitimate."
