Minsk, April 20 (Interfax) - President Alexander Lukashenko onApr. 20 promised that there would be no "color revolutions" in Belarus and said he was open to mending his strained relations with the Russian government.
"As long as I’m president I won’t allow any color revolutions in the country," Lukashenko said at a joint session of the two houses of the legislature in delivering an annual message to the people and parliament.
"There won’t be any such situation in the country, not even if we pay world prices for everything we buy from Russia," he said.
"We are past the point where we could have been brought to our knees," the president said. "Let me stress this again – I don’t want any confrontation with the Russian Federation. This has been the essence of my policy for 15 years, starting with the referendum on the union of Belarus and Russia."
"We [Belarus and Russia] haven’t moved too far away from each other, we’ve just been verbally wrangling to some extent for the past half-year over those duties," Lukashenko said.
"It isn’t too late to go back and sober ourselves up. To go back to the principles that were put at the basis of our union," he said.
