MOSCOW, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev onJan. 19reorganised the Kremlin's administrative control over its volatile North Caucasus region, where insurgent violence has risen sharply in recent months.
Medvedev said he had established a new North Caucasus Federal District to separate the mainly Muslim regions of the North Caucasus, from some of the more stable regions around it.
Medvedev appointed Krasnoyarsk governor Alexander Khloponin to head the district. Khloponin will hold the rank of deputy prime minister within the Russian government.
