Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said the ratification by the Ukrainian parliament of the agreement on the Russian Black Sea Fleet shows a prevalence of common sense.
"I am very happy about it. It shows that common sense has prevailed and Ukraine’s strategic interests have also prevailed over one-minute emotions, which were manifested in the form of various noise effects," Medvedev said at a press conference in Oslo on Tuesday.
"I believe this [the signing of the document] is a major diplomatic event, a success," he said.
Medvedev said he is confident that the presence of the Black Sea Fleet in Crimea ensures the security of the entire region. "The presence of the Russian Navy in Sevastopol contributes to security in Europe and the Black Sea region," he said.
