You're reading: Riga says sanctions against Russia may be loosened only after situation in Ukraine changes

Riga -- Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics has said that the only reason for easing or lifting sanctions imposed on Russia would be the improvement of the situation in Ukraine.

“If the situation had changed for the better, we would definitely have a reason to talk about easing or lifting of the sanctions. If not, then this political tool should remain in force,” he said on Jan. 6 commenting on the Latvian government’s report on the tasks of the country’s foreign policy and related progress.

According to him, the government’s general position is that the crisis in eastern Ukraine should be resolved, that political dialog established and Russia should be involved in this dialog and should bear responsibility for its actions.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, Karlis Eihenbaums, told the BNS agency that the debate about loosening or lifting sanctions against Russia will be possible only if the current situation changes.
