You're reading: Russia calls new Canada visa forms intrusive

MOSCOW(AP) — Russia said Friday that Canada is asking too many questions on a new visa application form, and Russia's top tourism industry watchdog warned that filling it in could land people in jail for divulging military secrets.

Canada introduced the new form this month, requiring Russians wishing to travel there to give a detailed account of their military service, including their commanding officers and where they served.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrey Nesterenko said on TV Friday that the form is "excessive," while the Union of Russian Travel Agencies warned that submitting a completed form could violate state laws on military secrets.

Nesterenko didn’t elaborate on his specific concerns, but he said if the form isn’t withdrawn, Canadians may soon receive a similar one.

The spokeswoman at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow was not immediately available to comment.
