MOSCOW - Russia will complete its Arctic radar field in 2014 and will be ready to meet "unwanted guests" in 2015, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Oct. 28.

He recalled plans to expand Russia’s military presence in the Arctic region and said that three expeditions are working to build infrastructures on the Arctic islands.

“Thus, we will complete our radar field this year, and in 2015 will be practically ready to meet unwanted quests both from the east and from the north,” Shoigu told the Defense Ministry’s Public Council.

The minister also recalled the efforts started recently to rebuild the airfields in the New Siberian Islands and on the Franz Josef Land, as well as air bases in Tiksi, Naryan-Mar, Alykel, Vorkuta, Anadyr and Rogachyovo. This work will enable us to protect national interests in the region, the minister said.
