Moscow - The Russian Football Union (RFU) does not have money to pay salary to Russia national team head coach Fabio Capello, RFU Executive Committee member Sergei Stepashin says.

“I am telling you responsibly that the RFU simply doesn’t have the money to pay Capello his salary. It’s inappropriate that the monetary allowance for the Russian national team’s head coach is not being paid. However, when the contract was signed, it was necessary to think about sources of its financing. And these sources need to be looked for now,” Stepashin told on Nov. 12.

“As a matter of fact, as a former Audit Chamber chairman, I believe pay should depend on results. This is called the efficient use of money,” he said.

“Capello has never brought up the issue of RFU President Nikolai Tolstykh’s resignation,” Stepashin said. “And he never will. He’s not that kind of person,” he said.

“I am sure the problem of salary should be settled on Nov. 15, on the day of the match with Team Austria. It must be settled by those who were responsible for signing the contract with Capello. As far as I know, the contract bears Nikolai Tolstykh’s signature and Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko’s note of endorsement,” Stepashin said.

“And in general, this situation is extremely unpleasant,” he said.

The RFU Executive Committee plans to discuss the organization’s financial situation at a meeting on Dec. 16, he said.
