OSLO (AP) — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has started a state visit to Norway, where he will meet representatives of the government and the figurehead monarch, King Harald V.

The visit is expected to center on issues related to the two countries’ common border in the Arctic region, including fishing rights and access to oil and gas in an area believed to be rich in resources.

Medvedev and his wife were received by Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and Crown Prince Haakon at Oslo’s Gardermoen airport.

Indra Oeverland, a Russia expert at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, says a long-standing dispute over territorial waters in the Barents Sea will most likely be discussed during the visit, but is unlikely to be resolved.
