MOSCOW, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- During a meeting with Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday, the leaders of the ruling United Russia party failed to nominate the candidacy of a new Moscow's mayor, local media reported.

United Russia is the only party having the right to nominate a candidate for the post, as it enjoys the majority in the city’s parliament, or Duma. Putin is the leader of the party.

During the meeting, the participants failed to complete the list of candidates to be presented to President Dmitry Medvedev, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

"The list is too long, it should be cut down to two to four names," RIA Novosti quoted the Chairman of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov as saying.

Gryzlov said the discussion would be resumed next week.

Medvedev on Tuesday dismissed Moscow’s Mayor Yuri Luzhkov "in connection with the loss of the president’s confidence."
