Jalal-Abad, April 19 (Interfax) - Supporters in Jalal-Abad of ousted Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev claim that he has not resigned and will soon return to Kyrgyzstan.
"Kurmanbek Bakiyev will return to Kyrgyzstan soon. You will see that this is true. He called us and permitted to make Faizulla Rakhmanov the new governor [of the Jalal-Abad region]. He is the president, he has not resigned," Bakiyev’s nephew, Zamirbek Nuruyev, told Interfax.
Meanwhile, Bakiyev’s supporters held a rally and seized the Jalal-Abad regional administration building on Monday, an Interfax correspondent reported from Jalal-Abad.
They elected Rakhmanov, chairman of a village council in the Bagar-Kurgan district, as governor and Kubanychbek Torobayev as the regional police chief.
The ex-president’s supporters are staying inside the Jalal-Abad administration building, and the administration members appointed by the interim administration have left.
