Tashkent, June 29 (Interfax) - The U.S. government has financed the delivery of humanitarian cargo to Andizhan, Uzbekistan, for refugees in Kyrgyzstan, the Uzbek embassy in Tashkent reported on Tuesday.

U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Richard Norland and UNICEF representative in Uzbekistan Jean-Michel Delmont were among the people who met the cargo in Andizhan, the report says.

The UNICEF assistance consists of 1,000 kilos of medications and pharmaceutical materials, sets for drinking water purification, and other humanitarian goods, the embassy said.

Despite the fact that most refugees had returned home by June 27, the date the referendum was scheduled to take place, it remains vital to keep access to humanitarian assistance in the areas of southern Kyrgyzstan close to the border, the embassy said.

According to the U.S. Department of State, Eric Schwartz, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, has now arrived in Uzbekistan.

During his visit to Tashkent, Schwartz is expected to meet with government officials and officials from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Red Cross Committee.
