You're reading: European Council calls on conflicting parties in eastern Ukraine to implement Poroshenko’s peace plan

The European Council has called on all parties to the conflict in Ukraine to fulfill the peace plan put forward by President Petro Poroshenko regarding the settlement of the situation in the eastern regions.

The European Council regrets that the ceasefire, which is observed by
the Ukrainian authorities, has not led to a complete cessation of
hostilities. Therefore, the Council calls on all parties to be faithful
to the implementation of the peace plan, the press office of the
Ukrainian president quoted European Council conclusions of June 27 this
year.

The council said it urged the Russian government to use its influence
of illegal armed formations and to stop the flow of arms and militants
across the border in order to achieve quick and significant results in
de-escalating the situation.

At the same time, the European Council supports the Organization for
Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission for monitoring the
implementation of the peaceful settlement plan and its role in
supporting the ceasefire and creating efficient border control, the
conclusions said.

Since Europe does not recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the
European Council welcomes work carried out by the European Commission in
order to implement the policy and the decision to ban imports from
Crimea and Sevastopol, which do not have the Ukrainian certificate, the
document said.

The European Council reminded everyone that the European Commission,
the European External Action Service and participating states have held
preparatory work on possible target measures in order to implement
further steps in case events in eastern Ukraine require this, the
conclusions said.

At the same time, the European Council supports the peace plan of the
Ukrainian president on settling the situation in eastern Ukraine, the
document said. The council notes the statement of Russian President
Vladimir Putin supporting the plan and decisions of the Federation
Council to revoke its permit to use Russian troops in Ukraine, the
conclusions said.

The European Council conclusions were posted on the Web site of the
Ukrainian president but the document was removed later. It is planned to
release the conclusions later, after the summit ends, the press office
said.
