The Belarusian Foreign Ministry regards Ukraine's signing of an association agreement with the European Union as a sovereign right.
“This is a sovereign right of a sovereign country,” ministry press
secretary Dmitry Mironchik told a press briefing in Minsk on June 26.
Ukraine is a close trade and economic partner of Belarus, he
underscored. “The Belarusian side will be attentively monitoring
adjustments of foreign trade terms which may derive from the association
agreement,” the press secretary said.
In fact, Belarus is conducting similar monitoring for all of its
trade and economic partners on a permanent basis, the ministry spokesman
said. “Even in the case of association or other agreements that alter
foreign trade frameworks, we take applicable protective measures
consistent with global practice if necessary,” he added.
