You're reading: Poroshenko, Barroso discuss EU macro-financial aid to Ukraine, upcoming gas talks

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso have discussed on the phone the provision of 760 million euro in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine by the European Union by the end of 2014.

The two officials have discussed the issues of the macro-financial assistance to Ukraine, the Ukrainian president’s press service reported. In particular, Barroso said that the total amount of aid that Ukraine would get by the end of the year would be 760 euro.

“Also, the EU is considering the allocation of the third package of macro-financial assistance, which Ukraine is likely to get in the first half of next year. Moreover, Jose Manuel Barroso said that the implementation of the EU requirements regarding transparency and budgetary policy by Ukraine would be taken into account in adopting this decision,” the press service said.

On the eve of the European Council’s meeting, which will be held on Oct. 23-24, Barroso said that the situation in Ukraine would be on the meeting’s agenda and the European Council’s position concerning the peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbas would be stated in its conclusions.

Poroshenko and Barroso also discussed the gas issue before the tripartite talks between Ukraine, Russia and the EU, which will take place in Brussels on Oct. 29.
