You're reading: Turchynov, Grybauskaite discuss Ukraine’s EU integration prospects, conflict in country’s east

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite discussed bilateral cooperation, European integration and the situation in eastern Ukraine at a meeting in Lithuania on Aug. 19, reads a statement posted on the Web site of the Ukrainian parliament.

“The sides discussed the development of bilateral cooperation, the prospects of Ukraine’s European integration and the changes that must take place in the Ukrainian legislation to speed up this process. Particular attention was paid to security in the region and the aggression of the Russian Federation in relation to Ukraine,” reads the statement.

Turchynov noted that Lithuania, which itself felt Russia’s aggressive policy and walked a path from the Soviet Union to the European Union, “as no one else understands what is happening in Ukraine, and is doing everything to help the brotherly Ukrainian people.”

“We as nobody else feel the support of the Lithuanian people. The position of the Lithuanian authorities has always been principled and unambiguous in the issue of support for our country,” Turchynov said.

As reported, on Aug. 17-19, Turchynov attended a conference of the parliamentary speakers of the Nordic and Baltic countries in Palanga, Lithuania.
