You're reading: Azarov calls his trip to Davos forum useful

Davos, January 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has described his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos as useful.

When asked to comment on the decision to remove Ukraine-linked discussions from the forum’s agenda, Azarov said: “I had such a busy program that I myself did not speak to the administration of this forum.”

“They had a chance to listen to the official view of the Ukrainian leadership. That is why we came there,” he said.

The trip was useful because the Ukrainian delegation vigorously discussed their attitude toward the ongoing situation in Ukraine with European and international media, he said.

It is imperative to find compromises, instead of pretexts for confrontation and clashes, in order to normalize the situation in Ukraine and allow the country to develop further and pursue its “European course”, Azarov said.

According to Azarov, Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland said at their meeting that European experts could analyze the latest laws adopted in Ukraine from the point of view of their compliance with Europe’s democratic standards.

Jagland also reiterated the need for dialogue aimed at restoring stability in Ukraine, Azarov said.

Policy should not be decided on the streets, Jagland said.

“There are quite extensive opportunities today to settle the situation,” the Ukrainian prime minister said.
