 BRUSSELS--Ukraine's future lies with Europe and the "thirst for freedom" shown by protesters against President Viktor Yanukovych won't disappear, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said Friday.

The European Union doesn't want to undermine Russia's ties with Ukraine, Mr. Van Rompuy said at the end of a summit of European Union heads of government, but he warned against the "outside pressure" placed on Ukraine's government not to sign a sweeping trade and political deal.
