The European Commission has assured Ukraine that no preferences will be provided to the South Stream gas pipeline, being developed by Russia, Naftogaz Ukrainy Director for business development Yuriy Vitrenko said.
“We’ve received all possible assurances that it won’t happen. This means there will be no preferences for the South Stream,” he told reporters on Oct. 14.
Should the South Stream enjoy any advantage, this would signal an explicit anti-Ukrainian stance by the officials involved in the decision-making, Vitrenko said.
At the same time, he said that without such incentives, the South Stream becomes no longer attractive, and, what is more, it could be used by Ukraine as a reverse route to get gas.
