MOSCOW - Greece's participation in the Turkish Stream project could make this country the main energy-distribution center on the continent, but the decision is left up to Greece, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

“We touched upon the prospects for implementation of a large infrastructure project that we call the Turkish Stream, a key project for transportation of Russian natural gas via Turkey to the Balkans, possibly to Italy, to Central Europe,” Putin told a press conference held jointly with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after their talks at the Kremlin on April 8.

“The new route will provide for the Europeans’ fuel needs and allow Greece to become one of the main energy-distribution centers on the continent, help attract significant investment in the Greek economy and create more jobs,” Putin said.

Ultimately, this is a matter for the two countries’ economic organizations and “a sovereign decision of the Greek government,” he said.
