You're reading: Ukrainian gas stocks in underground facilities shrink by 36.5 percent since start of heating season

Gas stocks held in Ukrainian underground gas storage (UGS) facilities shrank by 36.5 percent, or 6.12 billion cubic meters (bcm) between October 20, when the heating season started, and January 10, gas pipeline operator Ukrtransgaz has said. 

UGS facilities contained 16.75 bcm of gas on October 20, falling to 10.63 bcm
on January 10.

Ukraine started withdrawing gas from UGS facilities on October 20, taking
around 10 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas out on that day alone.

UGS facilities contained 11.46 bcm of gas on December 31, 2014, 17.9 percent down
from 13.95 bcm on December 31, 2013.

Ukraine stored 11.635 bcm of gas in UGS facilities in 2013 and withdrew
12.665 bcm, 8.9 percent more than it stored. Ukrtransgaz took 12.328 bcm out of storage
and Crimea-based Chornomornaftogaz – 337 mcm.

Ukrtransgaz has 12 UGS facilities with a total capacity of 31 bcm.
