The Ukrainian authorities have taken a number of important decisions to reform the energy sector and are now looking forward to Western companies' investment in Ukraine's gas transport system, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

Speaking at a press conference in Berlin after a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on January 8, Yatseniuk said that Ukraine had passed a law allowing Western companies to invest in the Ukrainian gas transport system with buying up to 49% of its shares, the Cabinet’s press service reported.

The Ukrainian premier stressed the importance of “European companies’ investment in Ukraine.”

“The South Stream [pipeline project] has been phased out, yet transit gas supplies to EU member countries should be handled,” he said.

“This year Ukraine has demonstrated its capability to reliably supply natural gas to EU member countries. As additional guarantees of regular supplies and for the formation of a new energy market in the European Union, we would like our Western partners, mainly Germany, to take part in investment in the modernization and joint operation of Europe’s largest gas transport system – the one based in Ukraine,” he said.
