You're reading: Afisha party

Our sister magazine throws the latest in its line of high-profile bashes this week as the Euro 2004 tournament gets to the semifinals (June 30 and July 1) and finals (July 4)... the MacCoffee Cricket Tournament takes swing at KIGA Stadium on July 2 and AmCham's Fourth of July Picnic goes down at Spartak Stadium a day early on July 3

weekends worth of indulgence in what’s possibly the most un-Ukrainian game ever invented. If you’re nostalgic for Britain or India (or just looking to meet a girl or guy who’s nostalgic for Britain or India), grab your sunglasses and come on out. The round-robin play will take place July 2-4, with the finals to be played July 9-11.

KIGA Stadium (1 Komorova; Kyiv Civil Aviation Institute). Call Thamarai (Tom) Pandian at 268-2508 or 490-2691 for more information. Free admission.

SPECIAL EVENT: Strip Show Finalists.

The Playmate Lounge presents Ukraine’s top six strippers, getting down especially for you and your loved ones. What more can we say? What more do we need to say? (It’s even better than a subscription to National Geographic.)

Playmate Lounge (82 Artema, Lukyanivska metro, 8-050-374-4924). Please call for show times.

SPECIAL EVENT: Afisha Party.

Afisha magazine (our sister publication, and boy, are we ever proud!), will celebrate its third anniversary as Kyiv’s coolest weekly with a huge birthday party. The Afisha staffers who share an office with us tell us it’s going to be the hottest bash they’ve ever thrown. Check out local deejays Sivash and Aleksey Kononov, plus the Le Hammond Inferno duo from Germany. It’s gonna be Kyiv hipsterific! Hey, who do we talk to about free passes?

Cafe Club Oranzheria (4 Baseyna, Mandarin Plaza, 230-9500). 10 p.m. Please call for ticket information.

SATURDAY 3

SPECIAL EVENT: AmCham Fourth of July Picnic.

How do you attract 4,000 Americans to Spartak Stadium on a Saturday afternoon? Forget a soccer game: offer them free Coke, Pepsi and ice cream. Okay, we’re just kidding, so spare us the letters. The point is that this annual Independence Day picnic is happening again this year, and if you’re a U.S. national, you’re bound to go. The food (not free) will be from Arizona, Limoncello, Papa Pizza, Walters and others. Yeee-haw! Huff it down fast and line up for thirds, pardner! Music by the fun Alex Dixie Band, a big ol’ Yankee-sized Grand Raffle and, of course, fireworks.

Spartak Stadium (105 Frunze, Lukyanivska metro). 4 p.m. Tickets Hr 15. Call 490-5800 for more information.

SUNDAY 4

SPECIAL EVENT: Cave Inn Quiz Night.

Quiz Night’s back, and the whole world’s watching. Okay, that’s not really the case, but this event, which takes place every couple of months, is a whole lot of fun. You get to show off your mastery of trivia, eat pizza and drink plenty of beer. (Speaking of which, if you plan on going, let them know, so they can order enough pies.) Entry is Hr 10 per person, with half the night’s pot going to the winning team and half going to charity.

Cave Inn, British Embassy (9 Desyatinna, Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro). 8 p.m. Please call the embassy at 490-3660 for more details.

SOCCER: EURO 2004 Final.

It’s the semi-finals, so the pressure’s on and nearly 1 billion people will be watching. Portugal face the Netherlands, while the Czech Republic meet Greece (this year’s Cinderella story) to determine who goes to the championship match. To the winners go the spoils, while the losers live in humiliation and shame, at least until next time.

UT-1, 9:45 p.m. Also visit Kyiv sports bars: O’Brien’s (17A Mykhailyvsky), Planeta Sport (3 B. Khmelnytsky), TimeOut (50 Gorkhoho), Eric’s (20A Chervonoarmiyska), Belle-Vue (7 Saksahanskoho), or Golden Gate (40/2 Volodymyrska).
