While pints at Eric's Octoberfest went down at Spartak Stadium Sept. 25, there are still some local restaurants and pubs worth checking out for their Octoberfest specials.
all the Germans fall down.
Octoberfest partying isn’t just for Bavarians, though. In Kyiv several pubs and restaurants have been celebrating this grand drinking fest, as will a highly anticipated event we mentioned in last week’s “7 Days in Kyiv” section. If you want beer, read on.
The Granddaddy of Them All
It’s safe to say many Kyivans already enjoyed Eric’s Octoberfest party on Saturday,Sept. 25at Spartak Stadium. Pub owner Eric Aigner, of Eric’s Family fame, hosted his second-annual Octoberfest bash. Same location as last year, same massive 1-liter mugs from which to drink his amazing assortment of imported German beers. It was indeed a good time, though a bit soggy from all the rain.
Going to the Center…
Slavutich’s Chateau brew pub (24 Khreshchatyk, 229-3704), already known for its Ukrainian brews on tap, has been pushing Octoberfest specials since Sept. 18, like 20 percent off the menu for all German passport-holders, or people who work with the German embassy or German businesses. Try their special Zolote Pshenichne (Golden Wheat) beer, or any of their Gold, Platinum or Silver home-brewed varieties (Hr 20 for 0.5l).
Remember that Chateau is part of the Kozyrna Karta group, so bring your discount card. Special ends Oct. 3.
More Traditional Spots
German restaurants Augustin (12/7 Husovskoho, 290-4114) and Myly (Little) Augustin (18 Chervonoarmiyska, 234-9129) have been the official importers of Germany’s Paulaner wheat beer for years now, and they proudly offer this beer and many others during their Octoberfest fun, which runs through Oct. 10. One new beer, special for the season, is the Paulaner Oktoberfestbier.
Both Augustin and Little Augustin maintain a cozy atmosphere that keeps spirits warm despite the damp conditions outside.
Along with the beer, the restaurants are offering a special fall Octoberfest menu at special prices. The food promises to be good, hearty fare for a festive time of year.
Also at Bierloha (14B Knyazhy Zaton, 572-7208), the same Paulaner Oktoberfestbier and Baltika #7, another good autumn beer, will be on tap. They’ll also have some nice German ice wine to try. Further off at Docker Pub (9 Bohatyrska, 451-8528), you’ll find an Octoberfest party sponsored in part by Lowenbrau and featuring both beers and German foods. At both places, these specials are on until Oct. 3.
