ModernJazzTranzit and lead guitarist Yotam Zilberstein arrive for two dates - Oct. 15 at Swing restaurant, and Oct. 17 at the National Philharmonic... Ukraine's baseball season winds down at Telbin Lake with the national finals on Oct. 16... just as BC Kyiv's basketball season is firing up, with the teams second home game at the Sports Palace Oct. 16. And don't forget the "Chopiniana" Russian ballet at the Kyiv State Musical Theater for Children and Youth on Oct. 16.

Pretty classical ballet in the Russian tradition, Mikhail Fokine’s dance, set to the music of the great Polish composer, is all maidens in diaphanous costumes, mincing in a charmed nocturnal glade. You can’t get much more graceful and crowd-pleasing than this, especially since Irina Gordychuk is dancing the female lead. The “Carmen Suite,” Roland Petit’s “Pique Dame” (set to music by Tchaikovsky) and “Polovtsian Dances,” another Fokine classic, are also on the bill.
Kyiv Musical Theater for Children and Youth (2 Mezhyhirska, 416-4280).
7 p.m. Tickets Hr 2 to Hr 20.

BASEBALL: Ukrainian Cup Final.

Back in the United States, the Red Sox are playing the Yankees for the American League pennant, while the Cardinals are taking on the Astros for the National League flag – but as long as Ukrainian baseball is around to divert our attention, who cares? Well, we do, but it’s still fun to go out to Bereznyaki Stadium and watch Kyiv’s Atma squad take on Kirovohrad’s KDTU team in this Ukrainian hardball championship. Buy us some peanuts, crackerjacks and salo, as the old song goes. Check out this afternoon game and then make it back downtown to watch the Major League action on satellite TV.
Bereznyaki Stadium (3 Shumskoho, Telbin Lake). 3 p.m. Free admission.
Saturday 16
BASKETBALL: BC Kyiv vs. MBC Nikolayiv.

The hardwood is back on the floor at the Sports Palace, meaning BC Kyiv’s Fab Five are ready to dipsy-doo, dunkeroo at the start of what promises to be another action-packed basketball season. The Gold and Green hope to again reach the finals of the National Super League this year, and to do it Italian head coach Renato Pasquale has brought in some extra help, namely 6-foot-11 Greek center Giannis Giannoulis and an American backcourt duo of Marcus Anthony Norris and LaMarr Greer.
Sports Palace (1 Sportyvna, 246-2476). 2 p.m. Tickets from Hr 10.
