Ukraine hosts Germany on Nov. 10 and then visits Germany on Nov. 14 in a World Cup qualifying playoff series that represent the most important games in Ukraine's history. French dance troupe Azanie is dancing their "Shore to Shore" program on Nov. 12 and it's a very big week for Russian theater, with a number of companies visiting and including a performance of Pelevin's "Chapayev i Pustota" on Nov. 11.

Arts

DANCE: “From Shore to Shore.” The France-based Azanie Dance Theater visits Kyiv to perform a program based on a play by writer Eduard Glissan concerning the problems faced by minorities living within a dominant culture. Founded in 1992 when dancer/choreographer Fred Bandonge teamed up with percussionist Areski Gametush, Azanie (an ancient name for Africa) typically deals with issues concerning current affairs and culture. EXHIBITION: “Crucified Buddha.” Paintings, graphics and video-installations by Ukrainian artist Oleksandr Roytburdt. One of Ukraine’s best-known masters of contemporary art, Roytburdt’s work hangs in private collections and galleries around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The “Crucified Buddha” exhibition is of particular note in that it represents the first time Kyiv’s Museum of Cultural Heritage is showing such contemporary work or video art of any kind. EXHIBITION: Socialist Realism Art Festival. Twice a year ARTEast Gallery hosts a socialist realism festival to give residents of modern Kyiv the opportunity to understand the artists and art of the Soviet past – as well as to buy it. More than 400 socialist masterpieces of the 1950-80s are on display – including oils, graphics, sculptures and posters – just oozing romantic sincerity and the promise of a better tomorrow. THEATER: “Chapayev i Pustota” (“Chapayev and Emptiness”). Based on the popular novel by contemporary Russian writer Victor Pelevin, the Kyiv production of “Chapaev i Pustota” stars Russian actors Sergei Nikonenko and Yevgeny Sidikhin. The work is based on the literary characters “The Famous Three” – Vasily Chapaev, a military leader from the Russian Civil War; his assistant Petr Pustota; and Anka – their comrade and machine-gunner. Critics have hailed the book as, “the first Zen-Buddhist novel in Russian literature” and the author has described it as “the first example of literature where the action takes

DANCE: “Only for You.” The Russia-based Todes dance troupe presents its latest program. Already well known in the CIS for its high-energy style and on-stage performances alongside pop signers like Alla Pugacheva and Valery Leontev, Todes has also danced its way across the United States, Israel, Australia and a couple of Michael Jackson charity concerts in Germany and South Korea. THEATER: Russian Theater in Kyiv

Some of the best-known Russian theaters appear on the Kyiv stage this week. U Nikitskikh Vorot Theater from Moscow performs plays by cult writers Aleksandr Kuprin and Vladimir Vysotsky. Steblov-Film Students presents their interpretation of Moliere, complete with theater and pop stars Spartak Mishulin and Nina Ruslanova. Finally, the Russian Embassy is sponsoring the Dostoyevsky Theater Festival in honor of the 180th anniversary of the writer’s birth. (See Theater Listings on page 11 for details.)

FILM: European Silent Film Festival. Belgian Ambassador Pierre Clement Dubuisson and the Musicians of Europe ensemble perform. (See Arts on page 11 for the story and schedule.)

CANCELLATION: Grands of Arts in Kyiv. The opera festival, scheduled for Nov. 7, 9 and 11, has been cancelled.
