HOCKEY: Belarus Open Championship.

The National Hockey League might not be playing this year, but that’s all right. The European game, with its bigger ice surface, is faster, cleaner, and more thrilling. So come on out and watch local pros Sokil play two: against Dynamo Minsk on the evening of Oct. 28, and against Dynamo Youth on Nov. 1. Added bonuses are that the games are free and they’re at the Avant-Garde arena, that lovably ramshackle dump of a rink out there on the edge of town.

Avant-Garde Arena (46 Melnykova, Dorohozhychi metro). Both games 6:30 p.m. Free admission.

Saturday 30

BALLET: “Coppelia.”

One of the greatest classical ballets, “Coppelia” – based on a story from Hoffman – is pure romantic exhilaration and delight, a lighter-then-air Parisian treat set to Leo Delibes’ charming music. The political season got you down? Facing late autumn with a certain chill in your soul? Drop in and be exalted.

National Opera Theater (50 Volodymyrska,

229-1169). Please call for ticket information.

Wednesday 3

SOCCER: Dynamo Kyiv vs. Real Madrid.

It’s Champions League time again and oh boy, never in the history of Ukrainian soccer has such a star-studded team as Real Madrid played before a madhouse packed full of rowdy Ukrainians. Think of it: Zidane, Figo, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo taking on Leko, Rincon, Gavrancic and Nesmachniy. How will our boys fare? We lost our last game; Real won their’s. We’ve both won two and lost one. It’s a toss-up. If you haven’t already got tickets for this one, put the house up (scalpers are asking Hr 200 for the cheap seats) and settle in.

Olympic Stadium (55 Chervonoarmiyska,

Respublikansky St. metro). 9:45 p.m. Tickets Hr 10 to Hr 50 (good luck finding any).
