Esthetic Education.
Pianist Dmitry Shnurov and bass guitarist Yury Hustochka are best known for their involvement in the ultra-popular Ukrainian band Okean Elzy. Now the musicians, who recently broke from the band, will get to prove that their move was a good one. Their new project, Esthetic Education, was founded by its non-Ukrainian vocalist Louis Franck, also a photographer and film director. Franck’s collaboration with Hustochka and Shnurov began in Moscow when he enlisted the duo’s help with a movie soundtrack. MOVIE PREMIERE
Cidade de Deus (City of God).
Starring Alexandre Rodrigues, Leondro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen and Douglas Silva.
Cidade de Deus, a dangerous Rio de Janeiro slum in the 1980s, is the setting for this story of an up-and-coming photographer struggling to make ends meet. The film’s protagonist is a poor black youth too frail and timid for the heartless violence and crime of the street, but too smart to settle for low-income, menial jobs. He finds consolation and inspiration through his photos. This multiple award-winning film cast Cidade de Deus natives throughout and was directed by Fernando Meirelles. It’s one cool, powerful film.
Ukraina cinema (5 Horodetskoho, 229-6301).
Tickets Hr 10 to Hr 46. Please call for show times.
