On the heels of a nationwide tour to promote their recently released album “Model,” Ukrainian alternative rockers Okean Elzy have announced a proposal to join forces with Kyiv’s Renaissance jazz symphony orchestra in a series of concerts. Renaissance is known in Kyiv for its bold experimental stylings and renditions of the works of George Gershwin and Frank Sinatra. Scheduled for next fall, the proposed program is expected to include 15 Okean Elzy songs arranged by Renaissance, making use of such varied instruments as harps and kettledrums.
Kyiv’s well-established Al Capone club has announced it will be closed for renovations from Aug. 13-29. Managers say they are planning to introduce some new features to the club, but kept details to themselves so as not to ruin the surprise. Al Capone has scheduled a free, open party for Aug. 12 to close out the club before the makeover. Clubbers will be treated to free beer and get a 50 percent discount on the price of tickets for three subsequent Al Capone parties, scheduled for Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
The location of the 2001 edition of Ukraine’s biggest rave festival, Kazantip, remains undetermined – despite the fact that the summer is already at its height. Plans to move the controversial festival to Yevpatoria have fallen through. City authorities say they are in the process of renovating one beach for youth-oriented events, but they turned down a request by Kazantip organizers to hold the festival there. The hunt for a new location goes on.
