NEW YORK (AP) — A rare collection of signed William Faulkner books and personal items has been auctioned for more than $833,000 in New York City.

The highest price at the Christie’s auction Tuesday went for "Absalom, Absolom!" The novel sold for $86,500. It surpassed the $40,000 to $60,000 pre-sale estimate.

Among the other top items was a first edition of one of the Nobel Prize-winning author’s most acclaimed novels, "Light in August." It was bought for $47,500.

Christie’s did not identify either buyer, or the American seller.

The collection’s presale estimate was around $1 million.

Faulkner was a native of New Albany, Mississippi, then lived in Oxford, Mississippi. The University of Mississippi runs a museum at his Greek Revival house.
