Tiesto of the Netherlands gets set to play a massive one-off gig at the International Exhibition Center

Lo and behold, after much pooh-poohing in these pages about the dearth of good deejay parties in the Ukrainian capital, the world’s #1-rated deejay is on his way. Tiesto, from the Netherlands, doesn’t play for audiences of hundreds, but thousands. His arrival is nothing short of, well, cool.

Tiesto’s upcoming gig at the International Exhibition Center on the Left Bank will provide the icing on the cake for what’s been a summer to remember. Moby came to town, several good new clubs opened or expanded, Eurovision put everyone in feel good mode, and now Tiesto will do his turntable best. The only thing better we can imagine would be for U2 to name Kyiv as a surprise date on their pan-European tour.

For those unfamiliar with Tiesto, he’s kind of like a rock star of the DJ set, the way that Moby has become. The thing is, Moby has largely moved mainstream by serving up rock/pop tunes, concentrating less on deejayed music, while Tiesto has worked to expand the shows that accompany his live performances: Dancers, drummers, acrobats and other elements are all part of the mix, and his shows typically last up to four hours.

Marathon concerts teeming with people are Tiesto’s hallmark and a tribute to the man’s energy and enthusiasm, if not mania, especially when looking at his travel schedule: Prior to arriving in town, Tiesto will play consecutive dates in Dubai on Sept. 15 and Moscow on Sept. 16 and then fly back to his usual home base, Ibiza, Spain, shortly thereafter.

Fans of deejay music simply must go to this concert, whatever the price of the tickets. Seeing – and hearing – is believing.
