Ukraine must demonstrate results in fighting corruption amongst high ranking officials in order to have the right to fight against domestic corruption, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at a first meeting of the commission which will select the director of the National Anticorruption Bureau in Kyiv on Jan. 9.

According to the president, the struggle must have a real economic effect, which “will raise the salaries of doctors and teachers and eliminate their dependence on bonuses from patients and parents”.

The president noted that society does not feel that there has been any real success in fighting corruption. However, he also said that most corrupt schemes created related to the previous authorities had been broken.

“Escalators used to send money to the highest rooms, at least, those things concerning the cabinet of the president and its administration, have been broken. Unfortunately, there are still many cases when they steal at the medium and high level,” he said.
