Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated Ukrainians on the 25th anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine and urged entire society, including political elites, to unite.

“Precisely a quarter of a century ago, on July 16, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic passed the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine, a historic document and a forerunner of the Act of Declaration of Independence adopted a year later. In that period of domestic history, the Declaration became a weighty factor of consolidation for the parliament and the entire people of Ukraine who wanted their life to change,” says the address by Poroshenko published on the official website of the chief of state on July 16 morning.

Ukraine is passing through a crucial period again, the president pointed out. “In order to go through hard trials of the external aggression and to overcome the negative impact of destructive forces on the domestic life of our country, we need unity of political elites and whole society. The cause of defense of the territorial integrity of the country and the simultaneous development of peaceful spheres of its life requires maximum dedication of every one of us,” Poroshenko said.

The joint manifestation of political will by the Ukrainians should lay down an unshakable legal foundation for the creation of a modern European state in Ukraine that would have powerful territorial communities and responsible and efficient managers in the state administrative system, the chief of state emphasized.
