You're reading: Poroshenko: Local elections in Ukraine to be held on October 25

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said local elections in Ukraine will be held in fall 2015.

“Decentralization envisages the transfer of the lion’s portion of powers to territorial communities, which I hope will eventually happen after the local elections, which should be held on October 25. We are not talking about any postponement. What happened to parliamentary elections will also happen to local elections because the only carrier of power in the state are the people of Ukraine and citizens of Ukraine,” Poroshenko said during a meeting with officials of the Ternopil region’s state administration on April 2.

He recalled that proposals on decentralization have already been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada and sent to the Constitutional Court.

Poroshenko said the proposed changes suggest giving the community most of the powers to “reduce the distance between citizens and the decision-makers.”
