You're reading: Poroshenko says parliamentary-presidential governance system optimal for Ukraine now

The existing parliamentary-presidential form of governance is optimal for Ukraine at the present time, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.

“The existing form of governance, which has developed in our country at the present time, is absolutely optimal,” Poroshenko said in presenting a bill on amending the constitution concerning the decentralization of the national governance system at the Verkhovna Rada on July 16.

It is impossible to oppose challenges facing Ukraine without a supreme commander-in-chief, the role performed by the president invested with the necessary authority, Poroshenko said. “What the constitution authorizes me to do as president and supreme commander-in-chief is quite enough, and I have no intention to ask for more,” he said.

Poroshenko urged policymakers not to agitate the public by “empty talk” on the matter but “to learn democracy and master the art of finding a compromise.”
