Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has expressed his hope of a reset of local authorities after the Oct. 25 elections.

“Full reset of the government is being completed, after the presidential and parliamentary elections. A new president has been re-elected, the parliament is almost 60 percent new, and I also hope that the reset will occur within local authorities. And the newly-elected representatives of the people will exercise governmental duties,” Poroshenko said at a meeting with heads of international local election monitoring missions in Kyiv on Oct. 23.

“We have a very important characterization of how democratic the voting process is: no one will tell on the eve of elections who will get elected. It is impossible to foretell now, and I think this is much better than when in totalitarian countries one can foretell without elections who, as a result of these pseudo-elections, can or will get relevant governmental powers,” Poroshenko said.

Hopefully, forces seeking to destabilize the domestic situation will not be backed by voters in local elections, the president said.
