The smell of smouldering wreckage hung in the air outside the village of Grabove, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, on July 18 as a light drizzle fell on bodies scattered across a wheat field. This is where the passengers of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 came to rest after it was ripped from the sky on July 18, four hours into its flight, as it passed over a patch of eastern Ukraine rent by fighting between the military and Russian-backed separatists.
