The relatives of those killed in the Malaysian Airlines MH17 disaster are preparing lawsuits to international courts worth hundreds of millions of dollars, the head of the main investigation department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Vasyl Vovk, has said.

“With respect to the financial component in these proceedings – the relatives of victims are preparing lawsuits to international courts. These are [worth] hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said at a briefing in Kyiv.

However, he expressed hope that by autumn this year there will be results from the ongoing investigation into the disaster and conclusions will be made that will allow the relatives of victims to further appeal to international courts.

“This is also a component of the political image of our country, for which we will fight. And there is no other way out rather than to do this in the framework of criminal proceedings,” Vovk said.

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with the flight number MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed in Donetsk region on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people on board.
