You're reading: Mogherini congratulates Poroshenko on democratic parliamentary elections

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko and the Italian Foreign Minister and newly-appointed European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, spoke by telephone to discuss the Ukrainian parliamentary elections and the upcoming pseudo-elections in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, whose legitimacy has been denied by Kyiv.

“The newly-appointed EU representative congratulated the Ukrainian president on having conducted democratic parliamentary elections and expressed hope for further cooperation. She stressed the importance of the Minsk accords being complied with by all sides which confirmed their commitments at a multilateral meeting Milan. In this context, Federica Mogherini said that Clause 9 of the Minsk Protocol of September 5 rules out any elections held in the Donbas region in breach of the Ukrainian laws,” the Ukrainian president’s press office said.

Poroshenko thanked Mogherini for her clear stance and called on the EU to act more decisively in the event of the Minsk accords being violated.

He also said that Ukraine is set for European integration like never before, implementation of its association agreement with the EU being one of stages in this process.

They also discussed plans to hold an international conference of Ukraine investors and donors in early 2015. They stressed the importance of reaching joint solutions at today’s trilateral gas consultations between Ukraine, Russia and the EU.
