Ukrainian Premier Mykola Azarov has called on the leaders of the political parties in the new Verkhovna Rada to start talks on forming a coalition.

“I’m asking the leaders of the political parties represented in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to start holding talks about forming a grand coalition,” reads the president’s official application posted on the Website of the Cabinet of Ministers on Friday.

“The scale of the tasks the country faces in the complicated conditions of the world economy demands consolidation, not confrontation,” Azarov said.

“I’m absolutely serious in saying this, and we’re ready for serious discussions about all problematic issues.”

The premier also said that now Ukraine is “in much better condition” than two-and-a-half years ago, but the challenges the Ukrainian economy faces “are very serious.”

“That’s why, if we’re thinking about the future of our country, we should forget about our ambitions, forget about any confrontation, and unite and work for the good of our country,” Azarov said.

“The next elections will be held in two-and-a-half years, so let’s have at least a year of calmness. This is enough time to take some consolidated decisions. And in a year you can start [putting questions] again. In a year or in a year-and-a-half the presidential election campaign will start.”

Earlier Azarov called all political forces concerned about fate of the country to start talks on creating in the new Verkhovna Rada a broad coalition based on European values.

Azarov also said that the government is seriously concerned over the situation with the vote count at the elections to Verkhovna Rada in several single-mandate election districts.
