Amid a faltering drive against crime and corruption during his year-long presidency, Petro Poroshenko met on June 19 with top law enforcers and demanded action.
“I demand greater level of coordination between the security structures. I will not allow anyone to pull the blanket over himself. We must demonstrate efficient interaction in order to provide reports not about the number of criminal proceedings, but about the number of court sentences. Corrupt schemes must be submitted to courts and criminals must be brought to criminal liability,” Poroshenko said.
He said that efforts must be coordinated by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, Security Service of Ukraine, Ministry of the Interior, National Agency for Prevention of Corruption, Prosecutor General’s Office and other agencies by the beginning of full-scale functioning of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau.
A year into Poroshenko’s presidency, Ukraine’s criminal justice system remains largely dysfunctional and ineffective. For instance, despite widespread evidence of murder and multibillion-dollar theft during the reign of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych from 2010-2014, no former Yanukovych officials have been brought to justice.
