Russian figure skaters Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov restored their status as the world’s top pair Friday by breaking their own world record in the short program at the European championships in Budapest.
Volosozhar and Trankov produced a flawless skate to score 83.98 points and open up a seven-point lead over Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, the pair who ended the Russians’ 20-month unbeaten run at last month’s Grand Prix Finals.
